South Carolina Amtrak Train Crash
In the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, an Amtrak passenger train collided with a parked CSX freight train near Cayce, South Carolina.
The Amtrak train was traveling from New York to Miami, carrying approximately 139 passengers and eight crew. There were no crew members or passengers on the CSX train.
Two Amtrak employees died in the accident. More than 100 passengers and crew members were injured. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation. Initial reports indicate that the Amtrak derailed because of a switch in the wrong position, causing it to hit the CSX train.
